Our Impact

Big, brilliant, and built for cold, polar bears are the very symbol of a wild Arctic. Yet, despite their size and strength, they need our help to survive the coming decades.
Making a Difference
At Polar Bears International, our mission is to conserve polar bears and the sea ice they depend on. We work to address both short and long-term threats to polar bears to ensure they roam the sea ice for generations to come. Explore our 2023 Annual Report and our quarterly impact reports below for highlights of our recent accomplishments.

3rd Quarter Highlights, 2024
Polar Bears International (PBI) convened a meeting of polar bear researchers at the International Bear Association (IBA) conference in Alberta, Canada. PBI team members gave presentations and presented posters, including one on a safer new live bear-trap design that will help communities safely relocate bears.
Our outreach staff completed another successful summer of sharing conservation information with visitors at the PBI House in Churchill, Manitoba, and the PBI Ice House in Svalbard, Norway. We also held our second summer camp for local youth in Churchill and hosted our annual Arctic Sea Ice Day awareness event.
PBI scientists co-authored several key papers that inform conservation. These included one on polar bear-grizzly hybrids, another on our new “Burr on Fur” tracking devices, and a third showing that polar bears in Canada’s high Arctic are poorly equipped to adapt to climate change.
After a devastating fire at the secure waste management facility in Churchill, we worked with the town’s Bear Safe Working Group to secure emergency resources, from shipping additional bear-safe waste bins to assisting in securing the landfill with improved electric fencing.

Together we can make a difference. If we work collaboratively and act on climate warming before it gets worse, we all win, and polar bears will continue to roam the Arctic sea ice for generations to come.
